SUMMARY:Rise and Design — where humans still beat AI
DESCRIPTION:AI is brilliant at spreadsheets\, code\, and first drafts. But when it comes to designing something you can actually manufacture\, drafting a watertight contract\, or building a brand that people genuinely trust\, the human edge still matters. \nRise and Design is a three-hour\, in-person morning at The Catalyst in Newcastle exploring exactly that gap. Three speakers — a product designer\, a commercial lawyer\, and a brand specialist — will each talk through where AI helps and where it falls short\, with plenty of time to meet other attendees before and after. \nWhen: Friday 11 September\, 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM\nWhere: The Catalyst\, Science Square\, Newcastle upon Tyne NE4 5TG\nOrganised by: Design Network North\nTickets: Eventbrite

SUMMARY:Cyber in Health Conference and Exhibition 2026
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nHow can we ensure the safety of our patients if our healthcare systems are vulnerable to relentless cyber attacks? \nThe digital health landscape is under unprecedented strain. In 2025\, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) dealt with 204 “nationally significant” cyber-attacks\, an average of four major incidents every week. The UK government has responded by proposing strengthened laws to improve cyber-defences for essential services\, including healthcare. At the same time\, recent news reports confirm actual data breaches affecting NHS organisations\, underlining the reality behind the stats and reinforcing the urgency for action. \nMany NHS trusts and care providers continue to rely on legacy infrastructure and systems that are increasingly vulnerable in today’s threat environment. The rapid adoption of connected medical devices and cloud-based systems expands the attack surface\, while evolving supply-chain and third-party risks raise exposure from external providers. Furthermore\, uneven cyber maturity across organisations and gaps in incident preparedness leave health services vulnerable to disruption and data loss. \nThe Institute of Government & Public Policy’s Annual Cyber in Health Conference and Exhibition 2026 has been designed around the current cybersecurity challenges in the NHS\, strategies for resilience\, cultural transformation\, innovations in cybersecurity\, the importance of collaboration and learning\, and the outlook on emerging trends and potential threats in healthcare cybersecurity. \nJoin the Institute of Government & Public Policy for the Annual Cyber in Health Conference and Exhibition 2026\, which will explore strategies for minimising cybersecurity risks for health and social care organisations\, safeguarding patient\, service user\, and staff data\, and implementing measures to ensure rapid recovery from cyber attacks. \n\nFREE to attend for NHS Professionals – use code Cyber-JH at the checkout to claim your free place!

SUMMARY:Making Social VR Safe\, Accessible\, and Meaningful
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a hot minute\, but we’re back with another event at Colony King Street on Wednesday\, 29th April. We’ll have a full news update (lots to unpack there)\, a talk from Virtuware Founder Hamza Qureshi on Social VR\, plus a few demos to dive into.  \nWe’re also very excited to be helping baptise the new Colony King Street co-working space as they once again open their doors to our own particular brand of tech meetup nerdery. \n\nSchedule\n\n6:00pm: Doors open\, registration\, demos and networking.\n7:00pm: Immersive News & Community Updates\n7:30pm: Main speaker: Hamza Qureshi – Beyond the Chaos: Designing Safe\, Accessible\, and Meaningful Social VR.\n8:00pm: More networking and demos.\n9:30pm: Event end\, after-drinks (venue TBC)\n\nTalk Details\nBeyond the Chaos: Designing Safe\, Accessible\, and Meaningful Social VR\nWith massive social platforms already dominating the VR landscape\, why build a brand-new one? In this talk\, Virtuware founder Hamza Qureshi will share the strategic decisions and real-world challenges behind creating his new social platform\, StageTime. Drawing on years of experience building massive VR spaces and working inside major social platforms\, Hamza will explore the specific gaps he identified in the market. He will discuss how existing platforms often cater heavily to hardcore ‘enthusiasts’ at the expense of casual users\, leading to bloated interfaces\, chaotic environments\, and high user friction. This session dives into the realities of designing a virtual ‘third place’ optimised for standalone headsets\, human-centric expression\, and healthy community building. Attendees will leave with candid insights into what it takes to build a seamless and meaningful immersive community from scratch.\n\nAbout Hamza\nHamza Qureshi is the Founder of Virtuware Ltd\, an immersive technology company based in MediaCityUK. He has been building experiences in virtual reality since 2016\, initially making his mark by creating one of the most popular karaoke spaces in VR. After spending several years working internally at VRChat\, Hamza took his deep understanding of virtual communities and founded StageTime – a platform dedicated to immersive social experiences. He is passionate about the evolution of the metaverse\, community building\, and the unique design challenges of social VR.  \nDemo Details\nTBC
