(From Genomics to Health Technology) \n\n\n\n Health technologies offer considerable promise\, but translating innovation into everyday patient care requires people to learn and work together across professional and organisational boundaries. This talk explores how communities of practice support that process through shared expertise\, sustained relationships and the development of common approaches. \n\n\n\n Drawing on successful examples from Life Sciences to Medical Technology\, the presentation examines how collaborative communities can support research\, develop standards and strengthen clinical implementation. It also considers what distinguishes an active community of practice from a network\, consortium or digital platform\, and why participation alone is insufficient evidence of impact. \n\n\n\n The talk concludes by exploring how these capabilities could contribute to a wider Greater Manchester community of practice\, bringing clinicians\, researchers & industry\, with patients & carers\, together to ultimately enhance the lives of people. \n\n\n\n Bio \n\n\n\nProfessor Ralph MacKinnon has been a consultant in paediatric anaesthesia and critical care transport physician at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust for over two decades\, and is the co-founder of Out There Health Tech. He began his career in genetics with a first-class degree from the University of St Andrews and research posts in North American genetics/genomics institutions\, before founding the UK’s first Gilles de la Tourette clinic and research team outside of London\, here in Manchester & commencing his Medical Studies. \n\n\n\n Across his career RM has built/developed communities of practice at every scale: the North-West Simulation Education Network (50+ NHS and academic sites)\, the International Network for Simulation-based Paediatric Innovation\, Research and Education (685 members\, 40 countries)\, and the Managing Emergencies in Paediatric Anaesthesia global collaboration.
