Greater Manchester NHS Trusts

Greater Manchester is served by NHS Greater Manchester, the Integrated Care Board (ICB) responsible for health services across the region’s ten boroughs and cities. The ICB sits within the Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership (GM ICP), established in July 2022, which brings together NHS organisations, local authorities, and other partners to coordinate health and social care for a population of approximately 2.8 million people.

The following NHS trusts operate within or primarily serve the Greater Manchester area.



Bolton NHS Foundation Trust

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust provides general hospital and community services to the population of Bolton, approximately 265,000 people. The trust\'s main site is the Royal Bolton Hospital in Farnworth.

Royal Bolton Hospital

A busy district general hospital providing a range of medical, surgical, maternity, paediatric, and emergency services. The hospital also houses the University of Greater Manchester\'s Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS), a ยฃ40 million purpose-built facility for medical education featuring state-of-the-art simulation suites.

Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust

Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (GMMH) is one of the largest specialist mental health providers in the country, employing over 6,600 staff and delivering services from 109 locations with an annual income of over ยฃ440 million.

Services

GMMH provides inpatient and community-based mental health care for people living in Bolton, Manchester, Salford, Trafford, and Wigan. It also delivers a wide range of specialist mental health and addiction services across Greater Manchester and the wider North West, including forensic mental health, rehabilitation, eating disorder services, and substance misuse services.

Digital Health & Innovation

GMMH has a growing digital health programme and is an active adopter of technology-enabled mental health services. The trust operates the Greater Manchester Universities Student Mental Health Service, a model that has been recognised as a national benchmark. Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust

Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) is one of the largest acute trusts in the UK, employing over 28,000 staff. MFT was formed in October 2017 through the merger of Central Manchester University Hospitals and University Hospital of South Manchester, with North Manchester General Hospital joining in April 2021 to create a Single Hospital Service for Manchester.

MFT operates ten hospitals across six sites: Manchester Royal Infirmary, Wythenshawe Hospital, North Manchester General Hospital, Royal Manchester Children\'s Hospital, Saint Mary\'s Hospital, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, University Dental Hospital of Manchester, Trafford General Hospital, Altrincham Hospital, and Withington Community Hospital.

Specialist Services

MFT is the single biggest provider of specialised services in the North West of England. Major specialisms include cardiac and cardiothoracic surgery, heart and lung transplantation, respiratory medicine, burns and plastics, cancer and breast care, genomic medicine, ophthalmology, paediatrics, and women\'s services.

Research & Innovation

MFT is a major research-active trust, closely integrated with the University of Manchester through the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC). The trust hosts the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre and is a partner in the Citylabs health innovation campus on its Oxford Road site.

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust

North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) provides emergency and urgent care services, patient transport, and the NHS 111 service across the entire North West of England, including all of Greater Manchester. It is one of the largest ambulance trusts in England.

Services

NWAS operates 999 emergency response, the NHS 111 urgent care telephone service, patient transport services, and the regional Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). The trust handles over 1 million 999 calls and over 1.8 million 111 calls per year across the region.

Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust

Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust (NCA) is one of the largest NHS providers in the country, serving a population of over 1 million people with around 20,000 staff. It was formally established as a single foundation trust in October 2021, bringing together Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

The NCA operates four hospitals across four Care Organisations: Salford Royal Hospital, The Royal Oldham Hospital, Fairfield General Hospital (Bury), and Rochdale Infirmary.

Specialist Services

Salford Royal is a nationally recognised centre of excellence and a major trauma centre. It provides specialist services in neurosciences, renal and intestinal failure, and dermatology, serving patients from across the region and nationally.

Innovation

The NCA has a strong track record in innovation and quality improvement, building on Salford Royal\'s legacy as one of the highest-rated NHS trusts in England. The trust is an active partner in Health Innovation Manchester and the Greater Manchester ICS.

Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust

Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust provides mental health and community healthcare services to a population of approximately 1.2 million people across several Greater Manchester boroughs.

Services

The trust provides mental health services for children and adolescents, adults, and older people, along with learning disability services, community physical health services, and drug and alcohol services. Services are delivered across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.

Coverage

Pennine Care serves the boroughs of Bury, Rochdale, Oldham, Stockport, and Tameside & Glossop, complementing GMMH which covers the western boroughs of Greater Manchester.

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust

Stockport NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital and community services to the population of Stockport and surrounding areas, approximately 350,000 people. The trust\'s main hospital is Stepping Hill Hospital in Hazel Grove.

Stepping Hill Hospital

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is one of Europe\'s leading cancer centres and the largest single-site cancer centre in Europe. It treats over 40,000 patients a year and serves a core population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester and Cheshire, with around 26% of patients referred from other parts of the country.

Specialist Services

The Christie provides comprehensive cancer treatment including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, surgical oncology, and pioneering proton beam therapy. Its Proton Beam Therapy Centre, which opened in 2018, is one of only two NHS centres in the UK offering this advanced treatment.

Research & Innovation

The Christie is one of the UK\'s largest cancer research centres, hosting over 600 clinical trials at any time. It is home to the Christie Clinical Trials Unit, the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (a partnership with the University of Manchester and Cancer Research UK), and extensive biobanking and genomics capabilities. The trust is a key partner for healthtech and medtech companies developing oncology solutions, diagnostic tools, and digital health interventions for cancer care.

Satellite Centres

The Christie operates satellite radiotherapy centres at Oldham, Salford, and Macclesfield, extending its reach across the region.

Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust


Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) is a major acute trust serving the population of the Borough of Wigan, over 300,000 people.

The trust operates three hospital sites: Royal Albert Edward Infirmary (Wigan), Wrightington Hospital, and Leigh Infirmary.

Specialist Services

Wrightington Hospital is a nationally recognised centre of excellence for orthopaedic surgery, with a leading reputation for joint replacement. The hospital was where Sir John Charnley pioneered hip replacement surgery. This orthopaedic specialism makes WWL particularly relevant for medtech companies working in musculoskeletal devices and surgical technology.
